This week we see the release of your newest song, "When I'm All Alone". When writing the new track overall, what is your inspiration behind it? What drives you both musically and lyrically?
I wrote this song while I was in LA with Bonnie McKee and my longtime collaborator, Brett Truitt. I guess Bonnie and I were both just in a season of needing to kind of retreat back into ourselves and didn’t even realize it until we both got in the same room together, and then this song just kind of slipped out.
When creating and penning the latest songs, what artists or influences did you channel?
Umm…I don’t know. I don’t think there was anyone really, as we were in the process of writing. I guess during the mixing process, I did definitely want a kind of Robyn bass part for the chorus and a bit of a Bleachers sing a long vibe though!
You seem to be very hands on in the process of your music and songwriting which is GREAT! Can you walk us through the process for the latest single release?
Yeah, I’m pretty obsessive over everything haha! For this song, specifically, I guess it just started out in LA, as I mentioned before, then came back to Nashville for a bit with me and Brett. Then it ended up in the hands of a great artist/producer friend of mine out of New York, named Florio, and he really hit a home run on the production. Then it went back to LA where the home Bas mixed and mastered it. It’s been around haha
When you have a concept for a song, how do you execute it? What comes first? The lyrics, the music, or do they work hand in hand?
I think a general idea of a song is the beginning. Maybe just a single line or hook. But usually the process is just looping something and mumbling a thousand melodies in gibberish for awhile until something stands out and then I chase that.
With the new music in tow, how does the song differ from your prior work? Or does it feed into a new realm for you as an artist?
I think it just feels like a step up. Just everything that I’ve been, as Phangs in the past, but elevated to where I’ve always wanted it to go.
As 2020 is off to a running start, what surprises do you have up your sleeve in terms of music, videos, and additional releases this year; especially in the current realm of things?
I have an entire full length album that’s coming out on August 14th. It’s called “Who’s Gonna Break Your Heart Tonight” and I just can’t wait to get it out! With that, there are several videos, alternate versions, livestreams, and a few more surprises!
