Doug Kistner Throws Back To The Eighties With "Only Road I Know"

Yacht Rock is, to many, a lost art, a remnant of a musical past long gone, but to Doug Kistner, it is his passion, and no one does it better than he does. With styles reminiscent of the golden age of rock and a lineup that includes instrumentalists like Billy Joel’s former saxophonist Richie Cannata, Doug Kistner’s single Only Road I Know is a classical yacht record, indistinguishable from vintage music from the 70s and 80s.

Doug Kistner is a renowned keyboard and vocalist hailing from Verona, New Jersey, who has worked on past projects with prominent names in the music industry like the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, John Waite, and Chicago’s Danny Seraphine. This world of experience has played a significant role in his exemplary skill as a musician and songwriter and helped kickstart his solo career.

The pandemic and restrictions put in place by the government to prevent the spread of infection made it impossible to stage concerts and live performances. This gave Kistner the go-ahead he needed to embark on a personal project of penning down and releasing records, an exercise he succeeded in with his two new single releases, “Only Road I Know” and “Since We Left Our Dreams”.

“Only Road I Know” welcomes you to its warm embrace with its mellow vibe, solemn mood, and a hint of nostalgia while captivating you with exuberant solos from Cannata, who played the sax in many of Billy Joel’s songs. The rest of the backing instruments are played by Mike Todd (Bass) and Dave Anthony on the drums, who play along a conga and shaker loop. With the ambient atmosphere that “Only Road I Know” radiates, one cannot help but, as Kistner puts it, “let the music get you through the day”.

“Only Road I Know” is only the first single in a promising solo career from the noted performer and is a great preview to the kind of music that he can accomplish, given his vast experience and contact with other seasoned instrumentalists.
