Interview With HeIsTheArtist
As 2021 rolls on, HeIsTheArtist is reflecting on the past year. While many count 2020 as a "worst year ever," HITA enjoyed massive success during COVID lockdowns. He scored several #1 iTunes chart singles around the globe, charting in both the UK and South Africa. He also managed to rack up an impressive 200K streams for his catalog on Spotify. We are honored to speak with one of music's true evangelical renegades, HeIsTheArtist...
Hi HeIsTheArtist! Obviously, 2020 was a very unusual year, and 2021 has started off in the same way. How did you find sanity and normalcy during COVID? HeIsThe Artist: I do meditation daily. It’s a great way to cleanse your mind, especially during a high stress year that 2020 was due to COVID. You had a pretty successful year on the music front. What was the highlight for you? Getting my first number 1 single on ITunes was definitely a highlight for me. It showed me that people are really feeling my musical evangelism. Your single, "If I Were a Virgin Again" is awesome. What inspired you to write and record that song? A lot of people feel like their future is over when they make mistakes, but this song is meant as a reminder that mistakes happen and all that is important is that you learn from them.
Congrats on several awards that you've been up for. What do industry awards mean to you? They are great to receive, however it’s important to not lose sight of why we are here as musicians, and that is to give the world music that they enjoy (and in my case spread the word of God also).
When are you planning to record a follow-up single or album? I have an upcoming EP titled “The Book of Mary” that I will be releasing on April 30th. It will include “If I Were a Virgin Again” and 5 other songs that will either get you up on your feet dancing and/or reminiscing on truths that need to be exposed (more specifically surrounding the issue of sexual exploitation in media). Any plans on live performances? Where would you love to perform? None as of yet due to COVID, but I would love to perform in the UK. I have a growing fanbase there and would love to perform for them live. Dream collaboration...who would that be and what kind of song would you sing? I would love to collaborate with Ne-Yo. He has that Dance/R&B vibe that would mesh well with my multi-genre vibe. I would love to sing his song “So Sick” with him (that song of his touches my soul so much). If you could meet your favorite singer, who would that be, and what would you say to them? It would be Brian McKnight and that I appreciate the work he does even though the industry hasn’t quite given him the proper recognition. What are your favorite things to do, outside of music? I love playing tennis, meditation, reading “New Thought” genre books, and enjoying nature. Most importantly I enjoy growing in my faith especially during these hard times of COVID. Any final words for our readers? To keep believing, keep dreaming, and always remember that God loves you.
